HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY: 10 FACTS ABOUT IMMIGRANT WOMEN

Did you know over 70% of our students are female?

Today we think of them and all the hard work they have put in to not only move to the United States, but then to begin a journey of learning English knowing that it will improve their abilities to support themselves and their families. And because they know no limit, neither do we. Today is to them - Happy International Women’s Day!

Learning a language is difficult and then when you think you’ve GOT IT you learn some words have totally different meanings in other countries. Man! But at last, our frustration has been put into song…and a great song at that. Here’s a Friday funny for our Spanish speakers! Enjoy. :)

When we think of Valentine’s Day we usually think of flowers, chocolates, cards, and our special someone. Those are all wonderful, but we wanted to put a bit of a twist on it as we spoke about the holiday of love with both our students and staff. So instead of talking about special Valentines, we asked - what do you LOVE about Austin?

It turned out to be a great activity and gave us the opportunity to speak with our students about the city we all very much love and call home. Enjoy the photos below and let us know which one is your favorite. Our personal favorite is Armando’s answer of “BUFFET PALACE.” Haha! So great!

Congratulations are in order for ENGLISH @ WORK’s newest graduating class! We were thrilled to welcome nine employees at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center to our growing group of E@W alums during a fun (and tasty!) graduation ceremony yesterday.
We even had one student, Segunda, who had perfect attendance for the entirety of the course. Truly an amazing feat!
Congratulations students! We are so proud of you and can’t wait to see how much further you’ll go in your English journey!

About

ENGLISH @ WORK is an Austin, Texas-based nonprofit whose mission is to increase immigrants’ opportunities for advancement by providing essential English language instruction at the workplace.

Since our 2005 founding, we have served over 800 workers at over 30 businesses in the service, healthcare, and construction industries in Central Texas.

Our students are hotel and hospital housekeepers, food service workers, and grocery store prep cooks. They hail from 30 different countries and speak over 20 languages, but they all have one common goal - to speak English well enough to do a good job and support their families.
